Although his visit to Cincinnati in March resulted in Terrell Owens departing unsigned, July proved to be a fruitful month for the veteran NFL star. With the health of Antonio Bryant in question, positive feedback from former Bengals QB, Ryan Fitzpatrick and the lobbying of current QB, Carlson Palmer, TO has a new team. It has been well noted the support that TO has received from friend and fellow NFL star Chad Ochocinco, but now the city in all a buzz with support for the vet who will be entering into his 15th season with their beloved team.
Although TO has graced 4 teams prior to this during his career, his stats are solid. He is third in career receiving yards (14.951), third in touchdowns (147) and sixth in receptions (1,006). Since Ochocinco, Bryant, Owens, Shipley and Caldwell have roster spots, which leaves four players, Jerome Simpson, Quan Cosby, Dez Briscoe and Matt Jones, fighting for the final spot since it’s unlikely to expect them to keep seven. Coach Lewis believes that TO’s talent is not the only factor that propelled the signing. Lewis admitted that he revisited the notion of signing Owens within the past few days and the signing of the 1 year deal was imminent. The two never lost contact since the original visit in March, and Lewis believes that Owens’ lack of a championship at this point in his career and the teams overall desire will result in an explosive season.
Owens appears to be the last missing cog in the machine that has become the Bengals of the new millennium. After speaking with a few life long, non-bandwagon fans, one cannot help but believe that the Bengals will be a force to reckon with this upcoming season. All have agreed that this move will place the team into the top 5 of the NFL. They remind the uncertain that the defense and veteran “guns” the Bengals will benefit greatly from this signing.
