An MC that speaks from the heart…….. A businessman…….a screenwriter and director………..a man…….a brand………..Big Tyme. Hailing from the streets of Long Beach, Calif., Big Tyme made a mark in the world of hip-hop six years ago with the release of ‘Underworld’. Although the mixtape only contained six tracks, it kicked started a career that is destined to be epic. I had the pleasure of sitting down with who many consider to be the “West coast Rick Ross” and we discussed his present and future in great detail. We started with him explaining to me how he is currently working his ‘It’s My Tyme’ which is being executive produced by Snoop and slated for a Dec 2010/Jan 2011 release. This connection came about via the ever expanding buzz surrounding Big Tyme. Snoop heard his music and contacted him. Their first, official, project together is the track, ‘Rockin My Chucks’.
Big Tyme, who is also an astute businessman, informed me that he is currently looking for artists to add to his roster at 710 Muzik Inc. Currently at the top of the short list is an artist by the name of Yung Cal. It doesn’t stop there, he has a clothing line under development, a feature film entitled, My Family, in the works and a video for his latest single forthcoming. The feature film has been presented to John Singleton for direction and will have Snoop in a starring role, as it takes you through the truthful background of Long Beach, Calif. The video for ‘Rockin My Chucks’ (Big Tyme, Calico Jonez & Snoop) will be available for view within the next 3-4 weeks, once negotiations are completed with Converse regarding sponsorship and product placement.
Given his growing popularity in the south, Big Tyme has already devised a plan to ensure that his career has longevity. He tells me that keeping his ear to the streets, remaining honest in his lyrics & never forgetting his beginnings will ensure this. His pure talent and method of writing will keep him on the airways and in iPods for generations to come. He shared with me that generally he listens to the beat, and then begins to write, or (when in the studio) he just steps into the booth and speaks his mind. In no time I’m sure that his goal of receiving an award to make his achievements tangible will be achieved sooner than later.
One item that does need to be cleared up. Many bloggers have made the assumption that Big Tyme is the son of Snoop, which is false. In the words of Big Tyme, “I’m not Snoop’s son…..he’s the big homie.”
