In October 2008, the mother, brother and nephew of songstress and actress, Jennifer Hudson were murdered by her sister’s estranged husband. Hudson went into seclusion until February 2009, when she emerged to grace us with a rendition of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ at Super Bowl XLII. After year of understandable silence regarding the tragic deaths of those so near and dear to her heart, Hudson finally broke her silence via VH1’s ‘Behind the Music’. She stated that, “It’s all a blur, it was surreal.” She went on further stating, “It was like I was outside of myself … For almost two weeks straight . . . [I was] inside one room with just family and friends coming in and out. I prayed when I’d get up in the morning and prayed before I laid down at night.”
During the 2009 Grammy’s when she took the stage to sing ‘You Pulled Me Through’ Hudson admitted that her slain family was on her mind. She stated that she could hear her brother encouraging her to do the best possible rendition and she wanted nothing less than to make him proud. Her grieving process was helped immensely with the birth of her son, 10-month-old David Daniel Otunga Jr. According to the (now) 28 year old artist, her son “makes me feel like the most special person on earth. I want him to get the same love and the same upbringing my mother gave us.”
“Today,” says Hudson, “I feel like I’ve lived about three or four different lives.”
