Gary Faulkner, 50, from Colorado was arrested this past Tuesday near the border with Afghanistan's Nuristan province via Pakistani police admitted that he had been hunting bin Laden since 2001. Upon arrest, Faulkner was found to have the following in his possession: a pistol, a sword, night-vision equipment and Christian religious books. According to the self proclaimed hunter, he had travelled to the area several times since September 11, 2001 and had no intention on killing the al Qaeda leader. Officers admit that they did not believe that he did not intend on killing bin Laden due to the weaponry traveling with him.
Faulkner underwent a medical exam on Wednesday at which point a Pakistani doctor determined that he suffered from psychological problems and has been undergoing dialysis every 20 days. Per the US Embassy, they have yet to examine or have access to Faulkner and were not made aware of the diagnosis of the Pakistani doctor. Faulkner’s brother, Dr. Scott Faulkner, stated that his brother does not suffer from any mental illness. According to Dr. Faulkner, "He doesn't meet any of the DSM -- that's the psychiatric manual -- he doesn't meet any criteria for psychosis. He is not schizophrenic. He doesn't have schizophrenia. He doesn't hear voices. God isn't telling him, 'Oh, Gary, go get him, go get him.' He's a normal person. He handles himself in society," Dr. Faulkner also admits that recently his brother felt that the US was not doing enough to capture bin Laden and that “he felt that he was, as a Christian, not afraid -- that he could boldly step out and that doors would be opened for him."
The California-born independent contractor, Gary Faulkner, has a lengthy criminal record according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The record is riddled with minor offenses dated from the 1980’s until 2006 (he was arrested for a traffic violation). Faulkner has served jail time on three separate occasions for various charges that included second-degree burglary.
********* A reward of up to $25 million is being offered by the U.S. State Department in return for information leading directly to bin Laden's arrest.
